The Dovelles on Daytrotter!

Daytrotter!

While we were on our West to Nest Tour back in October, we had the wonderful opportunity to sit in for a session on Daytrotter.  If they booked us on the session, we promised to bring a freshly baked apple pie, and didn’t fail to deliver! We recorded this session in Davenport, Iowa in the basement of an old school building, where they have a small studio.  We recorded on tape, and they only used two microphones for the recording, with the four of us singing into one mic, and the other one on the guitar.  With the brisk Iowa wind blowing fire engine leaves off of the trees outside, this was a magical day.

Click here to stream/download our session.   You can try out Daytrotter for 2 weeks for free!  Right now, if you subscribe to Daytrotter for a year, you get a$20 credit for their online store where they have a ton of vinyl of their sessions!

Thank you, Daytrotter!

Star-Spangled Banner in Taos, NM

Hello Doves!

Tour has been quite the adventure, so far!  Here is a video of us singing the National Anthem at a Roller Derby in Taos, NM!

Fun things to watch for: Alyssandra can’t turn off her inner audio engineer and moves Tess’s head closer to the microphone, twice.  The sound guy doesn’t take his hat off til halfway through the song and is chewing bubblegum.

Next stop: Chicago!

Late night session with Joy Shannon and the Beauty Marks

Hello doves!

On Friday night, Jenny, Mary, Tess and I were honored to be invited to a late night recording session at Secret Hill Studios with the lovely Joy Shannon.  Joy plays Cello with The Dovelles, when we play with a full band.  Her band, Joy Shannon and the Beauty Marks, is working on a new album that will be released sometime over the next few months.  We’ll keep you posted!  Here’s her facebook page, and her website.

When we came into the session, we were a little nervous, we had been spending so much time rehearsing for our last few shows, that we hadn’t been able to spend as much time rehearsing Joy’s song, as we would have liked.  So, the four of us gathered around our new Clara mic and pieced together each note in each harmony, section by section, for her song, Liam Neeson.  (Yes, that Liam Neeson)  The song is just stunning.  It has a really interesting chord progression that was a challenge.  We layered our vocals over each other, and by the end it sounded like a whole choir!  We all sat in the control room together to listen at the end of the session with our eyes, wide and our smiles, big.  Not bad for a Friday night!

Here’s a teaser:

Buskerfest!

Hello lovelies!

We won Buskerfest!  Thank you to everyone who tossed a few wooden nickels our way!  It was a very surreal and beautiful evening.  We passed out free copies of our Live at 4th St. Vine Album, and sang into our new Clara mic as we watched smiling faces in the audience.  It was an honor even to play, and such a surprise to win, since it was only our 2nd show performing together!  I feel like this is the beginning of a great adventure.

Buskerfest captured the spirit of the Long Beach Community.  There were all sorts of familiar and new faces, and everyone was happy to take in everything our music scene has to offer.  Kids were dancing.  I voted for all my favorite bands.  We felt so much love.  As I walked around all sorts of strangers walked up to me and gave me their nickels, and long after we ran out of cds, people came up to me asking for more!

Our prize is $7,000 worth of merchandise printed up for our band including tote bags, t-shirts, and posters!  We are so thankful.

Next up: our cross-country tour all the way to New York City!
